Common (Bad) Advice Given to Those Accused of Shoplifting

Store security told you that if you signed some form, they wouldn't call the police.  

That turned out to be a lie. (And they didn't give you a copy either.)

Store security told you that if you cooperated with them, they wouldn't call the police.

That turned out to be a lie.

Store security told you that if you paid the store a fine, they wouldn't call the police.

That turned out to be a lie.

The police told you that you weren't really being arrested - you were just "getting a ticket".

That turned out to be a lie.

The police told you that you could change the Court date whenever you wanted by going to the Courthouse and simply asking them.

That turned out to be a lie.

The police told you that you didn't need legal advice and that you shouldn't bother getting a lawyer.
